it just struck me how weird it is that practically everyone i know has a mobile phone. and it’s almost become a necessity instead of a choice/luxury (like “i’d love to have a phone with me wherever i go, how convenient!”) remember when we were kids in primary school and kids who had handphones were like… RICH. and then in secondary school, when we passed out classlists for whatever reason and we had to fill in our handphone numbers in one column, it was still common and not strange for people to leave it blank, or write N/A (which i recall being quite a cool, adultish thing to write at that time.) i can’t exactly remember when i started thinking “oh how weird” whenever i was told that someone didn’t have a cell phone. somehow i remember always imagining the person walking along the street and taking a bus, and staring out the window. it would’ve given the person more imagination time because everyone else who had a phone (OR A PAGER omg) would be looking at it while walking, while crossing the road, while on the bus, while in church. it is now possible to go from school to home to wherever and not notice ANYTHING because you were too busy looking at your messages, your ears were plugged so all you heard the whole time was christina aguilera and you didnt have to communicate with ANYONE while taking the public transport because the EZlink card just makes everything so EZ. no ticket tearers (where have they gone!) or asking the bus driver how much it’ll cost to go somewhere. and as if things couldn’t get worse, the few precious moments when someone looks up from text messaging, your eye gets caught on just for laughs gags on the screen in front of you.

okay so i started out talking about cell phones. and right now, i doubt i can find one person that i know who doesn’t own a mobile phone. everyone is trackable, everyone is contactable, everyone has been turned into a paranoid person darting for his/her phone everytime the screen flashes. and as much as i wish to desert my phone and my contactableness, there’d always be something important that i could miss like the US embassy calling me to clarify something about my visa application, or the university calling me about something or my family calling me about an emergency. how did people survive these things without phones in the past? which reminds me of romeo and juliet… the whole donkey/horse delivering letters too slowly so they missed the message and died thing. so the fact is, they didn’t survive. and that is why pagers and handphones were invented. and now people are “dying” of radiation and killing themselves and other people because they were using their phones while driving.

this is all quite funny and humans are inherently self-destructive creatures, don’t you think?

when i have my own home, i would love to paint the walls olive green, chocolate brown, dove grey, cranberry, and mauve (: maybe more…but for now its these colours. and it definitely has to have a huge cosy couch that is soft and warm and covered in throws of all sorts of fabrics and colours and patterns, and cushions, fluffy cushions! also, a couple of big fireplacey chairs, maybe one for the papa and one for the mama and one for the little baby. velvety greens, plush mochas, warm oranges.. and awesome rugs that make you feel like curling up on them. sweet warm lighting, and (this is a little idealistic) the constant smell of freshly toasted egg sandwiches or chocolate chip cookies. it would have many a bookshelf full of books! some with yellowing pages and wormy residents. the lower shelves would have baby’s books, and the higher ones would have mamas and papas books! ha! oh but no porno magazines please. toilets could be anything!! one toilet could be painted rainbow shades! another could be tiled with mosaic tiles… perhaps dark purple. and ooooh… the bedding. the best part (: i never knew why people were so obssessed with bedding until recently. i shouldn’t start on bedding… it’ll take forever.

back to studying! hmmm… (:

really, i should be forging ahead on page 412 of my psychology textbook of biblical proportions, but i was just attacked by an Urge to list the foods that i’m craving.

* freshly deep-fried, crispy, golden brown cereal prawns!!

* creamy, cold, a little tangy (maybe mango!) cheesecake!

* oily, sweet, glistening, fragrant BLACK CARROT CAKE with EXTRA chilli!

* a big fat chilled chocolate bar full of CRUNCH (:

* a bowl of piping hot, flaming red & yellow chicken curry with chunks of succulent chicken breast meat and soft potatoes, good ol’ loaf of freshly baked white, fluffy gardenia sliced bread to go!

* a platter of huge, juicy, red strawberries and fresh golden sweeeeeeet mangoes (: super cold!

* a plate of barbecued chicken wings oozing oil and marinate sauce, coated with freshly squeezed lime.. mmmm…

* TOM YUM SOUP!!!!!!!!

* (a little odd but) a plate of fresh green asparagus stir fried with salt and garlic to crunchy perfection.

i could go on some more, but i really need to get back to studying. plus, a medium sized lumpy brown lizard just ran out from BEHIND MY LAPTOP and it dashed BEHIND MY PRINTER. it was 20CM AWAY FROM MY HANDS.

i am beyond disgusted right now. so much for an appetite.

carrot cake

the carrot cake cafe was what kate wanted the name of her cafe to be at the end of the movie.. (sorry if you haven’t watched it and plan to, that’s…sort of a spoiler. but not really.) anyway, i watched the carrot cake conversations with shanny last night and i liked it! i really enjoyed it.. always feel inspired by such lovely local pieces.

had a little chat with andre and shanny and hakim last night while waiting for my delicate (!) laundry to be done, and we ended up talking about usp, which andre was in, and shanny applied for it but didn’t get it. i still think its awesome what they do in there, all the great modules and encouraging creativity and imagination etc etc, but i still think the concept is outrageous. granted elitism is a worldwide phenomenon and is largely accepted, but that doesn’t prevent it from being outrageous, still. honestly i felt quite taken aback when all 3 of them took the opposite stand that it would be a waste of resources, or communism if such systems didn’t exist, and i couldn’t help feeling really sad because ultimately, what did i expect…i had to know that i was talking to people who were part of a university. and i forget that i’m one of them too. its horrible. how can they ask you things like “what do you want to do with your life?” NO ONE KNOWS what they want to do with their life at 19 okay. and even if they did, they’d change their mind at least 3 times before they die. it’s the stupidest question in the world and they ask scholars that. i could hurl.

they should ask them things like, what do you think of the University Scholars’ Program? and if the applicants kiss ass and go I think its a wonderful program that offers great opportunities for students with the aptitude for YADA YADA YADA then out you go, scholars shmolars.

okay that would be the day.

AAANNYway, i was wondering how it’d be like if i were to open a little cosy cafe in a corner of a quaint street somewhere in the world (maybe sanfrancisco!) with comfy couches covered with soft, tattered throws and warm lighting, and wall paper! and sell homemade coffee and tea and lemonade and hot cocoa and pomegranate juice! and cookies and muffins and all sorts of nice fluffy, flaky pastries with fruit! with bookcases and luggages chockful of books so people could come in and shimmy up into a corner of a couch, grab a book, a corner of a blanket and a nice hot cuppa and just while the afternoon away (: i predict that my recent obssession with looking up baby names and their meanings will soon become thinking up names for this (for now) imaginary cafe of mine.

it’s pouring outside, and it sounds like my grandmother in heaven is wringing a big towel. i just heard a chirping sound come from outside my window, and for a little second i’d wished it was my knight in waterproof armour blowing a whistle for me to come to the window. i looked out and all i saw was a little black bird standing, drenched from claw to beak, in the middle of a grass patch. no bird in its right mind would stand out in an open grass field in such a storm. i believe this bird had lost its lover. love could be the only reason for such stupidity.

i bought a plant that is green in pot that is white and a watering can that is silver. i felt important walking out of the store with a plant that is mine and that i will feed water and look at when i am bored. although anyone looking at me then and now wouldn’t realise anything different, no one would’ve suspected that i was feeling anything but nonchalant. i don’t know why i get so excited about little things like buying a new green plant and a watering can, or planning in my head to go out with a boy and where we’d go and what we’d do and what we’d see or say or hear, even if i act like i don’t really care. and i don’t know why i act like i do care when i go for weddings and birthdays and important ceremonies when i’m really always thinking about anything else in the world but that. its not that weddings aren’t important, i just prefer plants. i bet you never knew that. i never knew that.

i wonder if i put 2 plants next to each other, what are the chances they’d fall in love. and if they do, i wouldn’t need to water them anymore because LOVE WILL KEEP THEM ALIVE!!!
